China: Protester Reported Beaten

A Shanghai woman who had traveled to Beijing to protest home evictions for real estate developments was detained and beaten by the authorities, a human rights group said Friday. The woman, Cao Yibao, was beaten so badly that she received multiple fractures to bones in her face, according to the group, China Human Rights Defenders. Ms. Cao and other members of a group from Shanghai, who were also protesting the loss of their homes, were detained in Beijing last month and handed over to Shanghai security personnel members, who beat her, the group said.
